Ain't been out but a couple times and have not seen squat or been able to hit squat. Seen a few woodies and mallards with O2 masks but not much else after opening weekend when ever jackhole under the sun shoots at every thing from wood ducks 150 yards away to 747 high sparrows.......UNTIL TODAY! Took the kids to a property that our chapter owns and manages and only hunts kids at. OMFG It was sweet! TONS of mallards and probably 75 teal lifted off the marsh at 6:45am as soon as they cleared out we went out and setup. At 7:30am Maggie tagged her first green head and Dixie made her first retrieve! Bird came in picture perfect, made 2 passes as Anthony and Maggie called it in and locked the wings and dropped like a rock into the spread just as his feet hit the water Maggie drills him! Anthony did have to go out with Dixie because she didn't see it (silly puppy was sleeping lol) but after she found it it was game on all day.
The kids surprised me with their shooting choices, they had decided on their own not to shoot groups of more than 3 and decided to only shoot drakes if possible since there were so many birds. Problem turned out that we had almost every group coming back with 10 or more birds in them. About 10 minutes after Maggie dropped hers Anthony nails a nice drake looked like he rolled it good as it hit the water, but just as we were getting ready to send Dixie it flipped over and started swimming away with it's head barley up. He does a quick swat and missed the bird but drills 2 of our hardcore goose floaters (from Santa last year). Second shot lays him on his back and Dixie was on the money with this one.....she figured out that when the guns go up she jumps up and looks over the top rail of the blind. Ended the day at 11:30 with 2 green heads , 1 bwt, 1 gwt, and one woodie. Awesome day was almost jealous of not being able to shoot but had a blast just watching the kids and dog work. Dixie was really starting to pick all the things up that I was worried she wouldn't. I only needed to nic her 3 times all day which is fantastic. I hate having to use the collar BUT sometimes there is no choice when she starts acting like an idiot. She even learned (and it amazed me) that when out of the blind when some birds started coming in Anthony stoops down and starts calling, she did a 4 legged squat to below the weed line and watched the sky!!! Was cool as hell to witness as she was never taught that with out being told "down" I wasn't even sure where the birds went just watching her watch the sky and look over at Anthony and back at the birds.
Anyway cool day and made my month Here's a couple pics.

I thought so. You never mentioned about a ticket getting issued for an unplugged gun. |
