For anyone who heavily fishs in the summer time, you know that Topwater is one of the most fun and easy ways to produce good fish. And if you have fished Willow Slough in the last month or 2 you also know that if its not weedless its gonna hang on something. Thats where good topwater tactics come in.

The first topwater tactic I will talk about is about the simplest. A Lizard or Fluke with a nice plastic hook, and no weight at all. Did I mention this is also the cheapest fishing you can do. Simply put the hook in the nose, bring it out, and then burry the hook in the plastics back. Bamm, you gots yourself a weedless lure that will not sink and a fast rate and you can for the most part drag it over grass, muck and pads with ease. The lure works with all sorts of presentations to, you can simply do a slow retreave to make it look like a something traveling over the top of the cover, or you could jerk it about 5-6 inches at a time giving it a more sparatic action that bass can't seem to resist. The following are my favorite choices for lure in this matter, One because they provide high visibility with an excellent silhouette. I buy the darkest ones I can find so they give the best silhouette. Also the reason that I like the GULP jerkbait shad, is because sunlight does not go through it making for the excelent outline, and i find that bass hang onto it just a tad longer, making for increased hooks

The 2nd topwater I will talk about is the Scum Frog. There are many kinds of frog bait, and they all have there place, i just like the ScumFrogs the most, one they are realitively cheap, they float and there legs have a hell of a kicking action to make the bass go wild. They are easily fished 2 and there are really only 2 kinds: the kind with the popper mouth, and the kind without the popper mouth. While the popper mouths have a very specific use which is obvious, the other kind with the more pointed nose are about the most weedless things out there, go ahead throw them in the most heavy cover with a good braided line(always use braided for topwater as braided line does not sink like mono, and it is strong for those rod breaking hooksets)and that bait is gonna make it back out. Again the best way to fish them is around the weeds and pads, and anyone who has ever caught a nice bucketmouth bass on one will all tell you, your in for a ride. I find that bass that hit on topwater lure are the most agressive and most of the time best fighting bass out there. I personally like the ScumFrogs with the Swimming legs that you would find on the end of those swimbaits that give the legs violent action. Then again there is something to be said for the frogs that have the skirt legs. They do make the bait look bigger and more visible to the bass down below. The Beautiful thing about frog baits is that they are simple to fish, just make them look like a frog traversing the top of the water and you got it. Follows are my favorite frog baits to use. And again i personally like the dark colors. These are only my opinons though

The wife and I went out the other night about 10:30 for some top water action. Dead calm and perfect for the taking. I had a Heddon Pop R and she was using a Strike King grass frog. I couldn't buy a fish, but she was killing them on the grass frog. Lady Luck I guess.

i'm headed to Willow Slough and Black Oak Baoyu this weekend and the only lures i am gonna bring with me are the topwater frogs, and some plastics to texas rig with. i have a feeling that i am gonna have to paddle most of the way in Black Oak though, that place is thick with weeds.

Thanks for the info. I'll check that out. Topwater fishing is the best because you see the fish EXPLODE on the lure.
