Additional trout won't be stocked in streams this year
The customary secondary rainbow trout stockings the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife usually does in selected streams in mid- to late May will not occur this year; however, plenty of trout stocked for the April 25 season opener remain, and they are bigger than usual.
"We switched to a different strain of rainbow trout and their growth rate in the hatchery is very good," said Dave Welsheimer, hatchery manager at the state's Curtis Creek Trout Rearing Station in LaGrange County. "Our stocked trout this spring averaged around 12 inches long and weighed close to a pound apiece."
Most Indiana streams do not support survival of trout year-round so Hoosier stream trout fishing is primarily a spring activity when water temperatures are cool. To extend the fishing opportunity, secondary trout stockings are normally made at four popular trout streams: Pigeon River in Steuben and LaGrange counties, Turkey Creek in LaGrange County, Little Elkhart River in Elkhart County and Little Kankakee River in LaPorte County.
"Despite the fact that we won't be making follow-up stockings this year, trout from the initial releases are still available, particularly in the more remote sections of the stocked streams, Welsheimer said. "We ran a little short on numbers this year but fully expect to be back on track to resume May trout releases in 2010." |
