In the early parts of spring i only fish 2 kinds of lures. One is a double willow leaf spinner bait, assorted colors and weights, and usually they are fished about as slow as i can fish them and still make the blades spin, while at the same time never neglecting to use the helicopter method when i find the proper cover. I also like to bend the longest blade out ever so slightly to make it vibrate even more with the slower retreive. Sometimes i will even use a Gulp grub style minnow as a trailer, usually in white or chartruse but only when i find a nice place to use the Helicopter method.
The other rig I fish is a good old texas rig, easy to do, even easier to fish. My plastic of choice is a ZOOM Super Salt Plus, 6" Lizzard. The colors i throw are Junebug with a Chart tail, and Black with red flec. For the bullet weight i like to go with a 1/4 oz BPS tungston bullet weight, don't know if they still make them, i still have plenty i bought from them 4 years ago. for the hooks i use BPS XPS Red super lock worm hooks Size 4/0, again i don't know if they make them anymore, but any style of bullet weight or worm hook will do. The reason I use a lizzard is that: one, i think that the arms flailing make it look better to bass, and two i think the arms add a little more water resistance and makes the bait sink just a little slower. The veratility of that bait is amazing, it can be fished in heavy cover, it can be fished deep when the top of the water is cold, and it can be fished rather successfully very very slowly when the fish are to cold to be really active.
The places I like to fish in the early spring are Willow Slough, Lasalle F&W area, specificly the body of water near Area 3, and my personal favorite when there is not much wind Lake Maxinkuckee(in an area that has a huge drop off the locals call "the Kettle" and when the sun is out right off of Culver Military Acadamy.)
These are my favorite early spring tactics for those bodies of water when i have access to a boat. When i don't have access to a boat, its always fun to go shore fishing at Willow Slough or Grand Kankakee Marsh though the best spots to fish at the Marsh require quite a bit of walking.
I didn't just post this to let you all know what i toss into the water, i would like to know what you all toss in the early spring for LMB. _________________ Its been said a million times, and it is still as true as ever, a bad day fishing is still better than a good day working. |

| DUDE, GOOD ARTICLE. I TO AM A ZOOM MAN AND WILL THROW SPINNERS EARLY IN THE YEAR. BUT THOSE LIZZARDS ARE GOOD TO DROP ON BASS BEDS. WHEN BIG MAMA MOVES THE LIZZARD OUT YOU SLAM HER. I WILL THROW FLUKES AND PURPLE WORMS WITH PINK TAILS. WE WILL HAVE TO HOOK UP AND GO TO THE SLOUGH. I LIKE FISHING IT. WILD BILL. |

we may just have to, lol. Always good to get out on the water with someone who doesn't fish the same way or the exact same spots on a lake. Its the only way we learn something new. _________________ Its been said a million times, and it is still as true as ever, a bad day fishing is still better than a good day working. |

I throw 1/2oz spinners in the early spring - the color varies on the time of day and the water color. They're slow and fish are lethargic. I do the same thing, I slow it down to where the blades are just spinning.
When the spinners aren't working I also Texas Rig PowerBait 5" or 6" finess worms in Motoroil or Pumpkinseed color. I also Texas Rig a variety of Yamamoto's, but Powerbait finess is still my favorite plastic.
When nothing is getting a bite, then I'll go through some of my crankbaits and maybe even a topwater - but that's usually after hours of frustration. _________________ -Kley-

Today i was fishing Nyona Lake with a buddy of mine, and didn't get a single bite till the sun came out. Spinners just were not cutting it out there. but my buddy taught me how to use a wacky style worms. We started to toss stick worms in hot pink color, with O rings in the center of them. We didn't actually hook the worm, but put the hook under the O ring. I used 4/0 worm hooks, but my buddy was using much smaller hooks and getting just as many as me.
The Conditions and Technique
We took the boat over to the docks and started to pitch the bait as close to or under the docks and would just let the bait fall, hoping that the fish would hit it. Worked like a charm. I caught 6 LM and he caught 8 LM and a really nice sized crappie. I hope to have pics as soon as he emails me.
