...unfortunately so was hot lead.

Went back to my usual fence row and within 10 minutes had a squirrel pop up a sassafras tree. It never gave me a clear shot and ended up back on the ground and I never saw it again.

I worked my way north hoping to find one on the ditch bank again. No luck. I did see a squirrel going around and round a big cottonwood tree in the south end of the back forty. I creep to the forty, slip across the ditch, and take up a position on the west side of the tree. It should still be up there since I haven't hunted back here yet and it is a fairly big tree.

As I am eyeballing the tree, I see a tuft of squirrel tail way up in the top. I think I can see his ears in a crotch, but with the dark dingy sky I can't make out any color. Going to have to wait.

20 minutes pass and as I am looking around the tree, I see on the north side of the tree another tuft of tail. I got two up this tree. One will move soon. The second one I spotted starts to fidget.

I can see the hump of her back and I think I can make out her head. She moves some more and I am sure that's her head. I look through the scope, lots of limbs up there. I look over the scope to make sure I am seeing what I am seeing. Peek through the scope again, and then one more time over the top of the scope...boom. Crap, I wasn't wanting to shoot yet, I wasn't even looking through the scope. My mind tells me hurry up and pump the rifle and get ready cause she is going to be on the move.

No she isn't, she falls to the ground. A quick look where the other one was and he has re-positioned himself. I walk over and she is shot right below the ear. I caught a big break on that one.

I locate the other squirrel, move to a better tree for that position and set up shop. This squirrel didn't take off, so he is going to sit there a while. What to do. Throw a stick on the other side and he moves a little. I throw a bigger stick and get the rifle back up and he still isn't convinced to come over on my side.

Suppose to be going with my cousin to Gander, so I know my phone is going to ring soon. I don't really want to sit here another 30 minutes hoping he moves to my side. Time for a first time experiment. Shoot the limb past the point he is sitting on and draw him over to my side. I shoot, he doesn't move. I shoot again, he moves down some. I shoot again and he comes down a few more feet and shows his head.

Boom...hang....drip...drop....spasm....done!!! Another one through the eyes.

Big male and average sized female, probably born this year. The male was one of the fattest squirrels I have ever cleaned.

I couldn't do this again if I tried. 999 out of 1,000 times that squirrel is going to bail when I do all that shooting. Especially an older male like this one. Cost me about 10 cents worth of ammo shooting today...getting expensive.

Star Crossed Lovers...Tragic.
