Had a visitor this evening. You can not appriciate their size until you get up close to them. I think this one was eye-ing my neighbor's little dog......
He got spooked by something, probably the glare of the sun reflected off of my bald head, and flew up into a tree next to the house.
Nice talons on this one! |

I belive this to be juvenile red-tail hawk. The sharp-shinned hawk is more red than brown on its chest. The juviniles of both are very close. However the differentiation is in the amountof coloration on the chest. The sharp-shinned has more coloration (red checks) on the chest than the red-tail. I could be wrong. It has been some time since my last ornithology lesson. Raptors were never my speciality.
