Got a call from a friend to go to his siter's house outside of Lowell to fish her pond. They had stocked it several years ago with hybrid gills, bass and channel cats. They want the cats out of the pond because they believe that the cats are eating all of the bluegill. No sweat. My friend (Andy) picked-up some nightcrawlers and off we went. This is where things get interresting. We had set some lines on the bottom with crawlers and we kept seeing all of these bass swim by. So, I grabbed a rod, tied on a Rapala shallow fat rap. We were catching a few bass but kept seeing a LARGE catfish swimming near the surface. It was EASILY between 30 and 36 inches. I had thrown the rapala across the pond when I saw the cat swimming on an intercept course with my line. Just as my bait gets to the cat, he dives. WHAM. He's on. I had him on for a good 10 seconds before he snapped my 20-lb Power Pro like it was a silk thread. The splash he made with his tail send waves across the pond. As we stood there, dumbfounded, Andy looks at me and says, "Well, you rode him for 8 seconds, so you get a score." I replied, "I think we're gonna need a bigger boat." We felt like the two guys from grumpy old men with their trophy walleye that they were always trying to catch. I want my revenge. I've got a few weeks until school starts.

We never hooked another cat, but ended-up catching about 30 bass. We caught them on everything from crankbaits to nightcrawler to spinnerbaits to Texas rigged Power Worms. Here are a few fine specimens:

Yeah... I want to see that cat too! It's amazing how big channel cats get in small ponds. We pulled a 5lber out of a tiny pond last year. Couldn't believe she was in there. They fight like hell too!

The pond might be 120 yards long and 20 yards wide. It is about 12 ft at its deepest point. So many bass. While I realize that the cats will eat a lot of the bluegill, I think the bass are doing a significant amount of damage as well.
