THE CHORE OF SETTING UP DEER STANDS ON PUBLIC AND PRIVATE
PROPERTY
When the deer season starts to draw nearer and nearer that chore that we
all love to do in the hot sun and mosquito infested woods and fields is
here. Putting up deer stands. We all know the drill, get the ladders
ready, find the keys to the locks, who’s house did I leave my climber at.
When setting up deer stands on private property it is a lot easier to drag
stands out to your spot with an ATV or truck. But if you intend on hunting
public property you have to do it the old fashion way, straight up work.
Deer carts are very useful tools. They can be used to move your stands
into the woods and are great for bringing game out of the field.
Pre-scouting out a spot will save you a lot of time and agony in the field
if you know were you are going. Notice the guy on the right not doing
anything, every hunting party has one. But we all looked on the bright
side, he was there.
Hacking thru some of the summer foliage and cover is not easy to do in
September. Making a small path is good. Clearing it out like a bulldozer
went thru is not good.
Making sure your stand is attached to the tree is key when it comes to
your personal safety. Move around to check stability and any noises that
might spook deer.
Have a friend stand below you to check your shooting lanes for you. Handle
all possible pruning and sawing chores that day. Take a deep breath and
sit in your stand to make sure it’s all-good.
Here is a typical situation. You asked your son three times if he packed
the cooler with water and Gatorade. And he tells you don’t worry dad I
packed it. Well from this picture guess what Ryan forgot to bring. Big
Bill had to be carried back to the truck in a deer cart like a sixteen
point 235lb buck. So when the chore is done you have the rest of the
season to play. Good hunting.
