HUNTING A PRIVATE GAME PRESERVE
Being an outdoorsman and having friends that are outdoorsman your always
looking for something to do. Recently between fishing trips there was a
weekend with nothing going on. So we decided to look for a place to try to
harvest a wild boar. I have had wild boar and it is really good meat. Team
Unstable's very own Nature girl found a ranch in Cheboygan County,
Northern Michigan called Renegade Ranch. This is a 300-acre ranch that has
thick woods, hills, swamps and pine trees. At first I was a little leery
about hunting a private preserve thinking that when I walked out there the
boar would be tied to a tree or in a cage. Boy was I wrong! This is a
ranch were they let you stalk by yourself all over the property. The
morning we showed up a gentleman named Stan cooked us breakfast and my
adrenaline had me ready to hunt.
This ranch has numerous types of game on it. But I was looking for a
Russian Boar. My partner Capt. Gar was looking to harvest a trophy ram.
Here is a mud hole were wild boar have been rolling around in. A boar sort
of has a footprint like a deer. You have to look close to distinguish the
two.
Here is some boar have been digging up some tender grass roots for
grazing.
Here is were a nest of boars had been lying down for the night.
Covering many acres of thick property looking for these boars was not easy
work. Walking and kneeling down to look for these Russians every 6 yards
or so was grueling work.
Finally a nice boar was within a good bowshot.
This particular boar needed three arrows and 1 hour of tracking to find. I
used a Fred Bear Vapor 300 Bow, A brand name Ted Nugent Uses religiously.
The arrows were Gold Tip Pro Hunters and had Crimson Talon 100 grain XT
Broad heads.
This was a nice boar after we field dressed it. The video of the field
dressing will be out soon.
While tracking rams I figured there could never be too much bacon in the
freezer so I filled it up with sausage and pork chops. MMMM good.
Hours of having weary rams move away and spot you from 150 plus yards in
the thicket make's it hard to get a shot. When we spotted this ram we
crawled on our stomachs thru the grass and around rock piles. We got
within 70 yards when Capt. Gar used a Thompson/Center Arms Encore 209x50
Magnum Muzzle Loader. The scope that was used is a Nikon Omega 3-9x40 Real
tree APG BDC250. The load was 150 grains of Triple 7 Pellet Powder. The
bullet was a 250-grain Super Glide Shockwave Sabot with the new two-petal
design. The field dressing of this ram and the shot that harvested the
animal will be in our video section soon.
After the hunt kicking back and having a sweet cabin with game mounts all
over the place is tranquil.
The lodging was awesome. The town of Cheboygan was 10 minutes away and had
nice places to eat and drink. We had breakfast every morning and was a
perfect weekend to get away being this ranch is about 5 hours from
Valparaiso, In. Larry one of the individuals and his dog Daisy made our
time there real enjoyable. Daisy is a boar dog and has never lost a
wounded animal yet. Larry did a great job in cleaning the animals and
getting them skinned for the processor. There is also a taxidermist in the
area that will come to the ranch and pick up your hide (GREAT LAKES
TAXIDERMY 231-333-DEER Todd Zeller). Also the processor had our meat ready
to go in one day and it was packaged very professionally. So if you think
hunting a game preserve is easy call Renegade Ranch and decide for
yourself.
