THE ART OF THE B.B. GUN
Why is it no matter how young or how old you are the first thing that one
wants to do when they put a B.B.gun in there hands is to shoot someone in
the butt. Everyone that has been shot in the backside knows exactly what I
am talking about. It feels like a bee just zapped you. But on a serious
note nobody should ever point a B.B. gun at anybody. One thing about a B.B.
gun is that it can be used as a good tool for breaking in a young person
and introducing them to gun safety. As a young kid to my present 40 years
old I still love shooting a B.B. gun in the back yard with myself or with
my nephews. When I take my nephews in the field I’ll let them carry a B.B.
gun. They love to shoot the duck and geese decoys from the blind. And
during the off-season I’ll shoot a B.B. gun with a scope on it and it
steadies my aim for the upcoming deer and coyote hunting seasons.
When I have summer cookouts I’ll set up a make shift blind with fast grass
and set up a can at different yardages surrounded by decoys of duck/ geese
and turkeys. The children get 3-shots and the adult’s get 2-shots to
advance to the next round. Children, women, adults are all eager to show
off there skills. Last year we had hunters of many years, a police officer
and kids ready to shoot. When it got down to the two finalists it was my
nephew who was in first grade and a midwife who delivers babies for a
living. After a marathon of matching the others shot my nephew finally won
the competition and received the prize of best shooter and a twenty dollar
gift certificate to a local store. How can a first grader out shoot great
hunters and police officers? Maybe because his uncle took the time and
patience to show him how to shoot. Remember that a B.B. gun can be a great
tool for introducing children to gun safety and can also be used for a lot
of fun and fine-tuning before the upcoming seasons.
